The Pima Meals on Wheels Program provides nutritious meals to elders or disabled individuals who are unable to leave their homes due to illness, disability or frailty. Drivers deliver chilled meals meeting 1/3 of the dietary reference intake for adults (people age 55 and over). Recipients must have the facilities and the ability to safely heat meals. While most meals are delivered during daylight hours Monday through Friday, once a week delivery and weekend frozen meals may be available in some outlying areas. Nutrition assessments and nutrition information are also provided to homebound elders who are at nutritional risk.
• People age 60 or older and their spouses, regardless of age, and handicapped or disabled people under age 60 who live with an eligible recipient or have been authorized for service by case managers within the Community Services System, if they:
- Have a minimum of at least two or more physical, emotional, or cognitive impairments resulting in an inability to prepare nutritionally adequate meals, or have inadequate kitchen facilities;
- Are unable to attend congregate meal sites;
- Are isolated and alone with no one to help with meal preparation.
• Although no income eligibility test is imposed, services are targeted to those in greatest social and economic need because resources are limited. Waiting lists may exist at any time.
Note: Home-delivered meals may also be offered through the Community Services System of non-medical home and community based services for elders and younger individuals with disabilities. This is an integrated program that offers a broad range of services that includes case management, homemaker and personal care, emergency alert, respite care, home adaptations, and more.
