Interested in PCOA services and aging issues? Looking for an opportunity to serve your community? The Council, consisting of community volunteers, assists PCOA staff in developing Older Americans Act program priorities, funding recommendations, and the Area Plan – our “blueprint” for action. The Council meets the third Wednesday morning of each month at PCOA and site visits may alternate with business meetings. There are no meetings in the months of July, August or December. Prospective members will be asked to complete a short application which will be reviewed by the Council’s Nominating Committee. Interested in community resources? Volunteers serve as PCOA emissaries to provide factual information, educational materials, and referrals to older adults and their caregivers. Monthly in-service training and resource materials are provided. PCOA Ambassadors are found in a wide range of community-based settings. If you are interested in serving within your own community. Do you have education or special interest in social work, counseling or a related field? If you have group facilitation experience and enjoy offering encouragement and support to others, then consider being a volunteer support group facilitator. Are you a people person? If so, here is your opportunity to meet, hand out information and talk with individuals interested in knowing about the services that PCOA provides. Events and fairs happen throughout the year on a sporadic basis and are accepted in accordance to the appropriateness of the event as it pertains to PCOA. Training will be provided. If you like to teach and encourage others, consider becoming a Living Well volunteer leader or coach. These volunteers receive training, ongoing mentor and peer support from experienced leaders. They facilitate classes and workshops offered throughout the community. Class participants are adults 60+, who are motivated to make realistic lifestyle changes to manage their ongoing health conditions, improve balance confidence and remain independent. Do residents of nursing homes touch your heart? Volunteers are trained and assigned to elder care facilities to advocate for residents of those facilities. Part of the national Long-term Care Ombudsman’s Program and Certified by the State of Arizona LTC Ombudsman Program. Interested in this complicated subject? Medicare/Insurance Counseling volunteers must complete 30 hours of training. They are trained to assist clients at PCOA and selected community centers and social service locations in Pima County. Affiliated with the State of Arizona Health Insurance Counseling Program (SHIP). Interested in your immediate neighborhood? NEIGHBORS CARE ALLIANCE (NCA) Outreach Coordinators assists neighborhoods and faith-based communities in helping seniors remain independent and in their homes as long as possible through the support of neighbors helping neighbors. Is finance your area of interest? PCOA’s Personal Budgeting Assistance Program helps prolong independent living for people on a limited income who can still make decisions about how to spend their money but have trouble with tasks such as opening bills, preparing checks, or drawing up a budget. Volunteers visit clients in the client’s home once or twice a month to help clients reconcile their bank statements and prepare checks for the client’s signature.
